The official release date for The Cabin in the Woods has finally been announced: April 13, 2012 (and yes, it’s a Friday.) It’s nearly another year of waiting, but we’re bound to have some terrific promotion in the meantime. We also finally have a synopsis of sorts; posted below with the article.

Aside from Whedon producing and co-writing with frequent collaborator and Cloverfield and Buffy writer Drew Goddard (who’s also directing), Cabin stars Thor‘s Chris Hemsworth as a young professional who, with a group of friends, visits a rustic cabin in the woods (makes sense) “and ends up scratching the surface of something so massive and horrific that they can only begin to fathom it as time quickly runs out.” My guess is that it’s a busted septic line.

The film also stars Richard Jenkins (Let Me In), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), Kristen Connolly (The Happening), Brian J. White (Stomp the Yard), Amy Acker (Angel), Fran Kranz (Donnie Darko), and Jesse Williams (Brooklyn’s Finest). Not much else has been said about the film, but with such names behind it, we can expect some genre-bending badassery (septic tank or not). Whedon himself has described it as, “The horror movie to end all horror movies,” though he may be slightly biased.

Exciting news! It looks like Cabin in the Woods will, definitely, finally, be released. Details are below.

Lionsgate is making a deal with MGM to distribute The Cabin in the Woods, putting an end to an unexpectedly long shelf life for a horror film that has a terrific creative pedigree and a high degree of fanboy wanna-see. Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard directed the film and co-wrote it with Joss Whedon. The film’s cast includes Chris Hemsworth, who made it before he was set to star as the title character in Marvel’s Thor. Ironically, Whedon and Hemsworth are reuniting, with Whedon directing The Avengers, and Hemsworth reprising his hammer-swinging role. It’s unclear when Lionsgate will release the film, but October is a good bet.

The delay has little to do with the quality of the film. It was once slated to be released by MGM on Oct. 23, 2009, but was pulled back because it was going to be converted to 3D. Then, everything froze at MGM because of the strangling debt load, and The Cabin in the Woods was among several pictures that languished. By the time the picture is released, Thor will have established Hemsworth’s star value, which will certainly help a film that also stars Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford.

If anyone’s interested, there’s an article by HitFix which says that Sony has now partnered with MGM and will take over the distribution side of things so it’s looking very likely that The Cabin in the Woods will be released, although it’s still unknown whether it will be theatrical or straight-to-DVD. The related extract is posted below.

With “Cabin In The Woods,” you’ve got a promising and uber-high-concept script that tweaks the iconography of teen horror movies in a way that I can promise we’ve never seen before onscreen, and you’ve got Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard involved. You’ve also got cast members like Jesse Williams and Amy Acker and Jodelle Ferland and… oh, look at that, it’s Thor [Chris Hemsworth] again. Throw in Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford to mix it up and keep it from just being another teen parade, and it sounds like a film we should have seen back in October of 2009, when it was first set for release.

The good news is that these films are going to find a home. The question mark is just what that means. Will Sony invest in giving them a full theatrical release? Will they shuffle them over to Screen Gems? Will they get perfunctory releases before they are sent to DVD and Blu-ray?

That’s what we don’t know yet. But at least we’re finally hearing some rumblings of release for these films and for whatever else is still lingering on the MGM shelf at this point. Here’s hoping the films and the filmmakers are given a fair shot, and that we get a chance to decide for ourselves as viewers whether these movies deserved their time in limbo, or whether they are gems, finally rescued from an unjust imprisonment.

We’ll have more as the details of the releases come into focus.

A small news round up!

First up, it looks like that upcoming movie The Cabin in the Woods has been pushed back indefinitely — it won’t be released on the planned date of January 14, 2011 after all — according to ComingSoon.net.

Good news UK fans, it looks like the Region 2 DVD release of the second season of Dollhouse has an extra feature; an easter egg! There’s plenty of speculation regarding this, but no one knows what it features, except the runtime of 1 min 40 secs, as stated by the BBFC. However, I’ll try to find out when I get my copy next month.

And finally, the Whedon Fest convention that was due to take place next month — the first of its kind in Toronto, Canada — has sadly been cancelled due to low ticket sales. You can read more about this over at Starry Night Events.

MGM’s dire financial troubles have already spelled doom or delay for several films: the next Bond movie was indefinitely postposed, The Hobbit is delayed to the point where Guillermo del Toro walked as director, and the Red Dawn remake is shelved for the time being, because the studio doesn’t have enough money to release the film.

Now the horror movie Cabin in the Woods, written and produced by Joss Whedon and directed by Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard, looks like the latest casualty of the studio’s misfortune.

In an article detailing how MGM can’t find anyone who wants to run the studio, THR says that “MGM has the thriller “Red Dawn” set for release in November and the horror thriller “Cabin in the Woods” slotted for January. But no trailers have been shot, and it’s assumed both will be pushed to later release dates.”

The sad irony here is that Cabin in the Woods was originally slated for release in February of this year, but in October 2009 a decision was made to push the release date so the film could be post-converted to 3D. A ploy to make more money off the film could now have put it into a position to make no money at all.

That’s a great shame. Whedon and Goddard have a solid cast (Richard Jenkins, Chris Hemsworth, Bradley Whitford, Jesse Williams, Amy Acker and Kristen Connolly) and have managed to keep most of the details of the script from getting out. It looked like Cabin in the Woods could have been a smart, fun horror movie to stand alongside Drag Me To Hell.

Last project update of the day.

First off, there’s an article in the press library that you may or may not have read which explains how Amy got involved with The Cabin in the Woods in the first place;

They hadn’t found someone for a part and it was a couple of weeks before they started shooting and so [Joss] called and said, “So we can’t find someone for this part and we start in a few weeks and can you do it?” And I’m like, “Hey. Anytime you can’t find anyone I’m available!” [Laughs.]

And secondly, you may have read the news where Amy confirmed that The Cabin in the Woods is a creature feature i.e. it does contain monsters, but there’s also another interview at SCI FI Wire with Amy’s Dollhouse co-star, Fran Kranz, that offers a little more detail on Amy’s role without giving too much away. It certainly sounds like a movie not to be missed!

Kranz—who, like Acker, starred in Whedon’s Dollhouse—added that The Cabin in the Woods has two different components: There are the kids in the cabin, but also a group of adults (Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford and Acker) in a separate subplot.

“It was like two totally different movies,” Kranz said. “The way it was shot or just the scheduling of the filming, I was sort of around. There was about a couple months with all the kids, and then there was about a month or so with the adults. I had a little extra to do, so I was in Vancouver while they were doing that. If you went on set, it was like a totally different movie. It had a whole different feel to it.”

Amy undertook several (spoilery) interviews lately, covering Happy Town and the Dollhouse series finale, and we were lucky enough to also receive additional confirmation from Amy herself that she indeed does have a small part in The Cabin in the Woods — it took 3 weeks to film, with most of her scenes being opposite Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. The extract is posted below; you can read this article in full & the other articles in the Press Library. Happy reading!

Q: You got to work with Joss and Drew Goddard again on The Cabin in the Woods, right?

Amy: Yeah. That was another lucky thing. They hadn’t found someone, and it was just a couple of days before shooting, so they asked me to go do The Cabin in the Woods. Drew is just so awesome, and Joss is one of my best friends. Any opportunity to work with them, I’m like, “I’ll do catering. I don’t care. Just let me hang out with you guys.”

Q: How big of a role did they have for you?

Amy: It’s a smaller role, but I was out there for three weeks of it. All of my stuff is with Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford, so I was just laughing the whole time.

Q: Is there a separate adult story going on, with this kid story in the woods?

Amy: I don’t know what I’m supposed to say about this movie. Maybe. It’s a horror movie.

Q: Is it scary or is it funny too?

Amy: I’m not going to say because I don’t want to get in trouble.

Q: What did you think when you found out it was going to be transferred into 3-D?

Amy: I was super-excited. I got a note. Drew sent out an email to everyone. Having a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old, every movie I’ve seen in the past year has been in 3-D, so I was like, “That would be so awesome, if they made a real movie in 3-D.” That’s the thing that everybody is doing now.
